Can Dogs Eat Human Food? A Safe and Unsafe Foods Guide
Which people foods are safe for dogs and which are toxic? A clear vet-sourced guide with a 3-check rule and what to do in an emergency.

Short answer: Some human foods are fine for dogs in small amounts, such as plain cooked eggs, plain cooked rice and seedless watermelon flesh. Others, including chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, xylitol and macadamia nuts, can be dangerous. When in doubt, don’t share it, and ask your vet.
Dogs will eat nearly anything, and that’s the problem. “My dog ate it and seems fine” isn’t a safety test. This guide sorts common foods into three groups so you can decide in seconds, with links to our deeper guides on the foods owners ask about most.
The 3-check rule before you share food
- Is it on the danger list? If it’s toxic, stop there. The list is below.
- Is it plain? No salt, sugar, butter, oil, sauces, garlic, onion or seasoning. “Plain” removes many problems before they start.
- Is the portion small? Keep treats to about 10% of daily calories, in pieces sized for your dog.
Foods dogs can usually have in small amounts
| Food | How to serve it | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Eggs | Fully cooked and plain | Raw eggs (salmonella); allergies |
| Rice | Plain, fully cooked; white for upset stomach | Seasoning, fried rice, diabetes |
| Watermelon | Seedless flesh, cubed | Rind and seeds; too much sugar and fluid |
| Peanut butter | Plain, unsalted, a small amount | Xylitol; high fat |
| Cheese | Low-fat types like cottage cheese or mozzarella, tiny pieces | Fat (pancreatitis), lactose, blue cheese |
| Carrots, cucumber, green beans | Plain, cut to size | Choking on large chunks |
| Blueberries, banana, apple (no seeds or core) | Small pieces | Natural sugar |
| Plain cooked chicken | No skin, bones or seasoning | Cooked bones can splinter |
Foods dogs should never have
The ASPCA’s poison control experts keep a list of common people foods to avoid. These are the main ones:
- Chocolate and cocoa: Contain methylxanthines. Dark and baking chocolate are the most dangerous.
- Grapes and raisins: Can cause kidney failure in dogs. The toxic substance isn’t known, so avoid them completely.
- Onions, garlic and chives: Can damage red blood cells.
- Xylitol: A sweetener found in sugar-free gum, mints, some baked goods and some peanut butters. It can drop a dog’s blood sugar dangerously fast.
- Macadamia nuts: Can cause lethargy, vomiting, tremors and fever in dogs.
- Alcohol and raw yeast dough: Both are dangerous, even in small amounts.
- Caffeine: Coffee, tea and energy drinks.
- Avocado: The ASPCA lists it as a food to avoid, and the stone is also a choking and blockage risk.
The “sometimes” foods that trip people up
- Dairy: Many adult dogs don’t digest lactose well. A little cheese is fine for some, but milk can cause diarrhea. See our cheese guide.
- Fatty scraps: Bacon, sausage, gravy and trimmed fat can trigger pancreatitis.
- Salty snacks: Chips, pretzels and salted popcorn can cause excessive thirst and, in large amounts, salt poisoning.
- Bones: Cooked bones can splinter. Raw bones carry their own risks. Ask your vet what’s safe for your dog.
What to do if your dog eats something toxic
- Take the food away and check your dog’s mouth for leftovers.
- Note what, how much and when. Keep the packet or label.
- Call your vet or an emergency animal clinic immediately. Don’t wait for symptoms.
- In the US, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is on (888) 426-4435 (a fee may apply).
- Don’t make your dog vomit unless a vet tells you to.
Some poisons, like xylitol, can take hours to show signs, so calling early matters.
Signs your dog has eaten something wrong
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Drooling, restlessness or pacing
- Weakness, wobbling or collapse
- Tremors or seizures
- A swollen or painful belly
- Unusual tiredness or refusing food
Quick answers about dogs and human food
What human foods can dogs eat safely?
Plain cooked eggs, plain cooked rice, seedless watermelon flesh, carrots, blueberries and plain cooked chicken are common choices, in small portions.
What foods are poisonous to dogs?
Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, macadamia nuts, alcohol and caffeine are among the most common dangers.
How much human food is okay for my dog?
Keep treats and extras to around 10% of daily calories, and let complete dog food supply the rest.
Is it okay to feed my dog table scraps?
It’s best not to. Scraps are often salty, fatty or seasoned, and they teach dogs to beg. If you share, share plain food on purpose, not leftovers.
